INDIANAPOLIS — Golf courses are back up and running!
At Highland Country Club, there's something very special going on: 100 holes of golf for charity!
Eighteen holes of golf is a lot during the summer heat, so imagine playing 100 holes in one day.
"It's a golf marathon [where] we have about 30 men and women. We're going to play 100 holes of golf today," Brian Crispin, Wheeler Mission's Director of Marketing, said. "[This is] all to raise awareness about the fact that people are homeless in our community, and they need help, and to raise money for Wheeler Mission so the work can be done to provide food, shelter and services to those men women and children who need it."
Lionell Phillips is one of many golfers taking the challenge to hit and keep on hitting.
"I'm just gonna go out here and wear my back out and deal with it tomorrow," Phillips said.
This is the 10th year for this unique fundraiser. Every penny raised goes right back to helping those in need.
"It's huge. For one, we get to gather together and be outside. We're achieving social distancing out here just to be together in fellowship," Crispin said. "Money we raise will help Wheeler during a difficult time. Through this whole coronavirus situation, Wheeler Mission has been there every single day. People have been clocking in to make sure people have a safe place to be. So the support that's happening here today makes sure that can continue."
Each player came up with sponsors for each hole they played, and they achieved their goal.
They raised over $68,000 for Wheeler Mission — $18,000 more than the initial $50,000 goal.
"People went above and beyond," Crispin said. "They stepped up and created an amazing accomplishment."
So thanks to these committed golfers, Wheeler Mission can stay on their mission to help those in need.
