HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — A major construction project in Hamilton County, designed to reduce congestion at the intersection of 146th Street and Allisonville Road, is about to enter a new phase Friday.
Allisonville Road between 146th Street and Kensington Drive, and between 146th Street and Helmsley Court, will close for 90 days beginning March 1.
“It’s going to be rough, but it’s going to be great when it’s done,” Gerry Porter said.
Porter has lived in his neighborhood off 146th Street for 30 years.
“When we moved here, this was a two-lane country road. It’s had multiple changes,” Porter said.
Porter is concerned about drivers taking a shortcut through the neighborhood.
“We want drivers to be safe going through our neighborhood. There are no sidewalks going through our neighborhood, so people that walk, kids that ride bikes are in the street,” Porter said.
On Tuesday, DroneCam 13 captured a bird’s eye view of the process.
The intersection will be transformed into an interchange with 146th Street going over Allisonville Road.
Crews will be installing storm sewer systems, placing new pavement and preparing ramps to carry traffic off the new roundabout to 146th Street.
Pedestrians won’t have access over the White River bridge until crews finish widening and adding railings.
Sharmin Kent’s home sits right on 146th Street.
“I’m hoping that the project does its job, and I hope the project is done swiftly,” Kent said.
Until then, Kent and Porter hope drivers pay attention.
“I know we’ve got speedbumps right now. The more attention we can bring to how many kids are in the area, the better,” Kent said.
“We want drivers to be safe when they’re driving through there. We know they are trying to pass through to get to Allisonville,” Porter said.
The entire project is expected to be complete by 2025.
