Go Red Goes STEM lets young women put their skills to the test

It gives the girls a chance hear from women in science, technology engineering and math fields.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - 100 high school girls are considering more options for their future.

It's all part of the American Heart Association's Go Red Goes STEM event.

It gives the girls a chance hear from women in science, technology engineering and math fields.

The students then got to put their skills to the test with hands-on learning stations.

The goal of the event is to empower young women to pursue careers in fields often dominated by men.

"We need to tap into the broader base of talent that's out there and to encourage women, and at this point, young girls, freshmen in high school to be a part of that and to think about the possibilities of that," said Shelley Meador, Go Red Executive Leadership Team.

Statistics show just 3 in every 100 women graduating from college get jobs in the area of STEM.

Experts say early high school is a critical time to reach girls about the possibilities.
