'Gnome away from Home' exhibit offers perfect staycation activity for kids

See your favorite storybook characters as gnomes at the annual show.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — It's officially spring and many students are getting excited about upcoming vacations from school. But for families who will be staying in town, it's easy for kids to get bored at home.

Garfield Park Conservatory has a temporary exhibit that will keep the kids entertained and prevent brain drain during break.

"Gnome away from Home" features hundreds of garden gnomes decorated to match a theme each year. This year's theme: storybook gnomes.

Unique gnomes this year include "Alice in Wonderland," "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Dr. Seuss, "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Little Red Riding Hood," and many more.

People from all over Indianapolis donate these gnomes to make it a real community event.

There's also a scavenger hunt to find hidden gems around the exhibit, and kids will have the chance to read all the storybooks represented in the decorated gnomes.

As an added bonus, the Garfield Park Conservatory is filled with all types of flowers and plants that may even temporarily convince you you're in a tropical location.

The exhibit runs through March 31. Admission is $4 for individuals and $10 for families of one to two adults and one or more child younger than 18. Children two and younger at free.
