INDIANAPOLIS — The Lunar New Year is just a couple weeks away and Asian communities in Indianapolis are getting ready to welcome in the Year of the Dragon.
On Saturday, the Global Village Welcome Center on the city's northwest side, hosted a family-focused event to teach guests what Lunar New Year is all about.
The event featured craft stations where kids could earn coins to exchange for prizes. Organizers say that an event like this is a great way to help people learn about new cultures.
"Within a three-mile radius, we have 130 languages spoken," said Chariya Namarsa, the Global Village event coordinator. "Not all of them are from eastern Asia. Some of them are from Africa. And some Africans don't celebrate the Lunar New Year. So this is a time where we wanted to invite all the community to come and learn another culture and be immersed in that different culture.
Lunar New Year is on Feb. 10 this year.
