A family said goodbye Wednesday to a young victim of gun violence in Indianapolis.

18-year-old Kayla Goggins was killed Friday night after a fight on the city's northwest side. She was remembered by her parents and friends, and her nine-month-old son, Jadden.
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the case.

"My daughter in 18 years, she got to enjoy freedom, she got to enjoy friendship, she got to enjoy a whole bunch. This kid is not even going to be able to experience, if it is indeed him, the life that my daughter got to live," said Trunnis Goggins, Kayla's father.

The funeral was held at Indiana Funeral Care on 82nd and Allisonville Road.

The Marion County prosecutor's office says the case is still under review for formal charges.

Original story:

Police say it started with a fight around 11 o'clock on the night of June 20th in the 6500 block of Crandall Circle, near 65th Street and North Michigan Road.

"I just can't believe this is happening," said Goggins' mother, Alicia Zimmer.

The morning after a fight turned deadly, Zimmer returned to the scene to grieve. "She has a nine-month-old baby boy, that doesn't have his mom anymore," Zimmer said.

Zimmer says her daughter was simply beautiful. "She was just a great kid, fun and goofy and loveable. She would do anything for anybody and she didn't deserve this," Zimmer said.

Police are still trying to find out how the fight started. 911 callers said there were several gunshots and neighbors say there were two groups, egging each other on outside of a home. When police arrived, Goggins had been shot in the chest. Though medics tried to revive her, she died at the scene.

"She was here with her two cousins and her cousins, or her cousin, got into it with someone in that house over there," Zimmer said.

Police had been called to the same home earlier that night for a fight. They returned later to find the young woman and mother dead.

"I don't know if she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, I don't know," Zimmer said.

Neighbors say there have been problems at the house for years, including shots fired and visits from police in the last few weeks.

Now that someone has been killed, they hope it will be a catalyst for change."Why? I don't understand and there's so much life out here to live," Zimmer said.
