Marian University students prepare care kits with winter essentials for Friendsgiving campaign

The kits include a warm hat, gloves and a scarf, plus some hot chocolate and other items they may need.

INDIANAPOLIS — Several young adults in central Indiana who were once in the foster system will soon have some of the essentials they need heading into winter.

Volunteers at Marian University packed hundreds of winter kits Tuesday at the Foster Success office. The kits include a warm hat, gloves and a scarf, plus some hot chocolate and other items they may need.

The program is part of Foster Success' Friendsgiving campaign. Foster Success works with foster youth who are between the ages of 14 and 26, offering them financial support, one-on-one social support and emotional support.

The kits will go to college students enrolled in Indiana's Education and Training Voucher program. The program helps young adults who were once in foster care pay for and go to college.

"Older foster youth do tend to, I wouldn't say are forgotten about, but they do tend to, once they age out, there aren't as many resources and support systems for them, so that's where Foster Success comes in," said Jarod Wilson, the senior director of impact and programs for Foster Success.
