INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Friends and former co-workers who couldn’t be at the funeral for Officer Bre Leath on Thursday still found a way to honor her.
More than a dozen people who worked with Leath at the Indiana Women’s Prison gathered at Leath's squad car in front of IMPD East District Headquarters for a vigil and balloon release after the memorial service.
“She was just an inspiring person," said Latonya Groves. "To be so young. She had so much energy and so much joy and so much love, and right now she is shining on us because I can feel it."
Many of them said they watched the service on TV but still wanted to find a way to pay personal tribute.
“It’s just our way of saying 'we love you, Bre,'” Renee Todd said.
“I wanted to do something for Bre because since we couldn’t attend her funeral," Groves said. "I wanted to be a part of this some type of way because she really inspired me as a young person."
Her co-workers say they hope they can do a more formal service once life gets back to normal.
“We will keep her memory alive because she was just a lively woman. We just loved her,” Todd said.
