Friend of accused Greenwood shooter recounts chilling experience

Isaiah Williams is shocked and saddened to lose a friend, not to mention having another friend accused in his death.
16-year-old killed in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Ind. (WTHR) A 16-year-old Greenwood man is dead and his friend, an 18-year-old is behind bars, accused of shooting him.

Police say the shooting happened early Sunday morning in the 2000 block of Jaden Lane.

That's where police say they found the body of 16-year-old Zachary Edwards in the backseat of a car.

The suspect, Isaac Stinemetz was arrested a short time later.

Stinemetz told police he pointed a gun at Edwards' head and pulled the trigger, but didn't think the gun was loaded.

Greenwood Police, though, say the gun was loaded and Edwards died from a gunshot wound to the head.

"I'm just shocked Zach's gone," said Isaiah Williams, who said he was just as shocked to discover Edwards dead in a car outside the home where Williams lives with his grandparents.

Williams says he got a call around 1:30 Sunday morning from Stinemetz.

"Isaac was like, 'Hey Wiz. Are you home?'" recalled Williams.

"And I said, 'Yeah.' and he said, 'Come outside.' And I said, 'Why?' He said, 'Someone's here to see you,'" Williams continued.

Williams says when he went outside, Stinemetz wasn't there, but William's recognized his friend's car and could also see the car's inside lights were on.

When Williams got closer, he says he recognized his other friend bleeding in the back seat.

"I ran back in the house and I woke up Nana and Papa and told them what was happening and I wanted them to go look," said Williams, who explained his grandparents thought someone may have been trying to pull a prank.

To prove that it wasn't a prank, Williams says he went back outside and took a picture with his phone and came back in the house and showed his grandparents.

"I told Jack, I said, ''I'm calling 911 right now because this is suspicious out there. That just don't look right,'" Williams grandmother, Tina Parsons, said she told her husband.

Greenwood Police say when they got there, they found Edwards dead.

A short time later, two teens showed up at the police station telling investigators they'd also been in the car when the shooting happened, but panicked and ran off, along with the suspect.

When police picked up Stinemetz at his home a short time later and took him in for questioning, they say he confessed.

"He told us he had dumped the gun down the storm drain after the shooting and took them to the storm drain where the gun was recovered," said Greenwood Police Department's Deputy Chief Matt Fillenwarth.

Williams wonders if it's the same gun, he says, Stinemetz showed him recently.

"He said he bought it and showed me the gun. He tried to point it at me, but I just pushed it away and told him to get it away from me. I don't do that, I don't play with guns like that," explained Williams.

"I just said, 'Isaiah, that could have been you in that backseat. That could have been you,'" his grandmother said.

Williams is relieved it wasn't, but is shocked and saddened to lose a friend, not to mention, having another friend accused in his death.

"I would never have thought Isaac would do something like that. Never," said Williams.

Stinemetz is being held without bond.

An autopsy on Edwards is set for tomorrow.
