FRANKLIN, Ind. (WTHR) - As more rain arrived Wednesday, people living in Franklin are concerned about the potential for more flooding.
Tuesday's deluge put much of the downtown area under water, and now an already soaked community is watching for more rain.
Province Park and the dog park across the street are still underwater, but most everything else is in cleanup mode now.
In downtown Franklin, some government offices had to close Wednesday because of flood damage.
It was hoses and fans, instead of people, that filled the Johnson County West Annex, which took in several inches of water last night.
And pockets of Franklin neighborhoods got hit hard too.
Some homeowners say it brought back memories of the historic flood of 2008.
Lyman Benner’s Castle Dr. home was essentially surrounded by a moat after Tuesday's heavy rain.
About 18 inches of water flooded the yard and rushed right into the basement.
Even though his sump pump never stopped working, the floodwaters flipped his refrigerator, knocked over furniture and caused major damage to his workshop and living space.
He said it all happened within just a few hours.
"At 4:30 last night, we didn't have any in the house. At 8:00, I've got a water-filled basement and I've got furniture floating,” Benner said. "It wasn't as bad as '08 and yet it is because it's just, it does the damage and you have to clean it up."
The City of Franklin made improvements to its stormwater and drainage system since 2008. The mayor's office tells us that prevented flooding in areas that would have flooded before.
The annex building, including the auditor and treasurer's office, will be closed again on Thursday as things dry things out.
