ROCKVILLE, Ind. (WTWO) - A former Parke County sheriff and his wife died in a crash Thursday night. Investigators say a drunk driver is to blame.
Michael and Darla Eslinger were passengers in a car being driven by their 17-year-old granddaughter on US-41 near Rockville when they were hit head-on by a truck, detectives told the Tribune-Star. The other driver, 41-year-old Brian Robertson, was intoxicated, according to police.
Robertson suffered internal injuries and was taken to an Indianapolis hospital, according to WTWO, our NBC station in Terre Haute. His passenger as also seriously injured and taken to a Terre Haute hospital. He faces OWI charges.
The 17-year-old driver of the Eslinger's vehicle had some broken bones and cuts. She also went to a Terre Haute hospital.
Eslinger was a four-term Parke County Sheriff and was also the past executive director of the Indiana Sheriff's Association. The 74-year-old's Facebook page says he and his wife Darla, 73, were married 55 years.
