INDIANAPOLIS — A house identified by firefighters as "squatter occupied" was destroyed in an early Sunday morning fire.

According to a social media post from the Indianapolis Fire Department, around 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, firefighters responded to a home in the 2800 block of East New York Street, near North Rural Street, on a report of a duplex fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire while also receiving reports of people possibly being trapped inside. Firefighters conducted a "rapid" search of the home and were unable to find anyone inside.

IFD says three handlines were in operation and the fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire is now under investigation.
