Muncie -  A Muncie apartment building was still burning Sunday evening, in danger of collapse,  from a fire that started Saturday night.

Those who lived there are now homeless.

Muncie fire crews threw every hose and ladder, they had on the Thomas Apartments after fire broke out around 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

"We had heavy fire showing from the 3rd floor. We had rescues from almost every side of the building with 35 foot extension ladders, people hanging out their windows," said Captain Brian Manship of the Muncie Fire Department.

The top floor attack backfired.

"The floor began to collapse around them so they had to evacuate immediately.  We lost some equipment but that's it.  I have a couple of walls right now that are bulging that look like they could go." explained Captain Manship.

Support beams were melting, floors started falling like dominoes.

Manship says, "The roof collapsed and most of the  3rd floor collapsed onto the 2nd floor and in the back the second floor collapsed onto the first floor."

"Everything's gone.  Everything.  It's just horrible I can't watch it I've been wanting to throw up all night. It just makes me sick," said a resident Kenton Bennett.

What started at 7 p.m. on Saturday became an all-night firefight.

"We have several firefighters that are exhausted at this time," said Captain Manship.

Firefighters and trucks started running out of fuel and were still knocking down flare ups on Sunday.

"We'll have to see how long we can keep the neighborhood safe. there are buildings, houses, and businesses that are in that collapse zone as well," said Captain Manship.

Twenty-eight Units destroyed.   At least 50 people homeless, hoping everyone made it out.
