COLUMBUS, Ind. — A family in Columbus was displaced after a fire destroyed their home late Sunday morning.
According to the Columbus Fire Department, shortly before noon on March 10, firefighters were called to a home in the 2600 block of Pearl Street, a few blocks west of Columbus North High School, after receiving reports that the house was on fire.
Firefighters arrived to the scene and saw heavy smoke coming from the back of the home. A privacy fence surrounding the home had to have portions of it removed in order for firefighters to reach the source of the fire at the back of the house.
A search crew then entered through the home's front door and started a search of the home, while a different crew worked to contain the fire at the back of the house.
Crews did not locate anyone inside the home, so they began removing portions of the ceiling to help get water to the fire in the attic. After 25 minutes, crews were able to bring the fire under control.
CFD says neighbors informed them the family who lived in the home was away and that their family pet was also with them and not inside the house. CFD notified the homeowners and are providing them support.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Damages are estimated at $75,000.
