INDIANAPOLIS — Family and friends gathered Saturday night to remember a mother of six who died in a two-car crash Friday morning on the east side of Indianapolis.
Michelle Umana-Rodriguez was taking one of her sons to school when the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Feb. 23 near the intersection of East 21st and North Irwin streets, just west of Shadeland Avenue.
Umana-Rodriguez's brother, John Ellett, said she threw herself on top of her son before the impact. Family told 13News that Umana-Rodriguez's six children are between the ages of 9 and 17.
Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.
On Feb. 24, Umana-Rodriguez's family hosted a candlelight vigil near the scene of the crash to reflect on their loss.
As of Sunday morning, police have not shared what could have led up to the crash. Umana-Rodriguez's son was taken to a hospital in "stable condition with minor injuries," according to IMPD, and medics took the other driver in serious condition to another hospital.
