Families find unique ways to celebrate Easter Sunday

For those celebrating Easter Sunday, it felt a little unusual.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – For those celebrating Easter Sunday, it felt a little unusual. Even though families had to be apart, many still found ways to be together.

The Speedway Police Department and the Speedway Lions Club escorted the Easter Bunny around town in a convertible. Families stood in their driveways and front porches to catch a glimpse.

“We have all been in a somber mood so hopefully we can put some smiles on people’s faces,” Officer Jereme Howery said.

Plus, a favorite Easter tradition went virtual. The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Egg Roll was canceled, so organizers made it an online competition in early April.

Mom Kyndal Mitchell and her two daughters, Kennedi and Khole, took part. They made their own course inside their home. Other families, like Missy Berg’s, took their contests outside.

When it came to gathering as a family, Katie McKinney came up with a unique way to celebrate.

“Well normally, we have 35 to 40 family members from nieces to nephews and grandchildren,” she said.

So instead, they had Easter brunch in her garage. One family sat on one side and the other six feet away.

“We thought, let's just eat in the garage. It’s not fancy but it’s the garage,” McKinney said. "At least we are together."
