INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Burial plans are underway for fallen IMPD Officer Breann Leath, who’s body was moved to Crown Hill Funeral Home Friday afternoon.
IMPD East District officers participated in the processional to honor one of their own who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The processional for Officer Leath stretched for blocks. It’s part of honoring the young mother and police officer.
Indianapolis resident Alan Augstin didn't know Officer Leath but took photos of the emotional moments. He lives near Crown Hill Funeral Home and joined others on the side of the road to watch the procession as it arrived with a full motorcycle escort.
“We lost someone very important to the community and it's important to know her life and legacy with live on here in Indy and we will respect her," Augstin said.
Officer Leath suffered a fatal gunshot wound after responding to a domestic violence call Thursday.
It happened at an east side apartment complex where the gunfire also injured a second woman.
Officers arrested Elliahs Dorsey on preliminary murder and attempted murder charges. He’s in the Marion County Jail awaiting his initial hearing.
Officer Leath's family call police work her dream job. Although Leath is just 24 years old and one of the newest members on the police force, she worked to make a difference one call at a time according to fellow officers.
Alexis Cretsinger also watched the processional outside of Crown Hill.
She learned the processional would pass their neighborhood Friday afternoon and did not want to miss the opportunity to show respect.
Leath’s age struck a cord with Alexis.
“She is very close to my age,” Alexis said. “She was so young and she had accomplished so much."
Now that her body is under the care of the staff at Crown Hill Funeral Home, even with social distancing requirements metro police say they are working with her family to make sure Leath receives full honors due for making the ultimate sacrifice.
