'Faith in a Case on Wheels' sends fully-stocked suitcases to Indy's unhoused

LaDonna Freeman said she got the idea when she saw people carrying their belongings in a trash bag.

INDIANAPOLIS — A Marion County leader is fighting for people who are often forgotten, doing it with faith and a suitcase.

Center Township Trustee LaDonna Freeman started "Faith in a Case on Wheels" with a grant from Foresters Financial. She purchased 50 suitcases, then got items donated by the community to fill them.

On Monday, Freeman took the fully-stocked suitcases to unhoused people in the Indianapolis community.

Freeman said she got the idea while driving around downtown Indianapolis and seeing people carrying all their belongings in a trash bag. She told 13News she needed to do something.

"Not only when they get done with some of these items, but we know they will use all of these items. They will be able to put their belongings in here. They won't need to use a trash bag anymore," Freeman said.

Freeman is loading a van with the suitcases every night this week and wants to continue the effort. If you have a suitcase to donate, you can call the trustee's office at 317-633-3610. Freeman said you can either drop it off at their office or call to arrange for them to pick it up from you.
