Authorities say an armed man fatally shot by Evansville police after charging an officer with a knife and stealing her squad car was homeless.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jason Cullum says 38-year-old Daniel J. Wooters died at a hospital following the shooting about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear said Wednesday that Wooters was listed as homeless but has family in Carbondale, Illinois.

Cullum says officers were called to a restaurant in Eastland Mall about a man making death threats. He says the man charged the first officer to arrive on the scene, then stole her car and led other officers on a brief chase before losing control of the vehicle on the city's east side.

Cullum says at least one officer fired on Wooters following a brief confrontation.
