Enbridge Energy has halted testing of newly installed oil storage tanks in northwestern Indiana after a blue dye used in the testing colored miles of local waterways.
Indiana Department of Environmental Management spokesman Dan Goldblatt tells The (Munster) Times Enbridge was testing the tanks for leaks using water infused with dye before releasing that water into Schererville's sewers.
Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission executive director Dan Repay says the dye was visible in tributaries that feed into the Little Calumet River.
Goldblatt says the colored water extended 6 to 8 miles through the tributaries, but caused no harmful effects to fish, animals or humans.
Enbridge spokeswoman Jennifer Smith says the company is installing a filtration system that should remove the coloring from the rest of the dyed water.
