INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — An elderly couple was able to evacuate their east side home when fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Clarence Thomas, 79, and Ruth Thomas, 77, told firefighters they were asleep when their smoke alarms woke them up. Ruth found the couch on fire and a home filled with smoke.
Fire crews got the flames under control by 10 p.m., but not before the fire caused about $80,000 worth of damage.
Both Clarence and Ruth were uninjured in the fire. They said they have no idea what could have started it. Firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause.
The Thomases say they've lived in the home for 50 years.
