WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Authorities are investigating after a crash between a school bus and two cars at a West Lafayette intersection left a man dead early Thursday morning.
On Feb. 15 shortly before 7 a.m., West Lafayette Police Department officers were called to a crash at the intersection of U.S. 231 North and Lindberg Road in West Lafayette.
Officers said the driver of the vehicle that collided with the school bus had serious injuries and was unconscious when they arrived on scene.
The West Lafayette Fire Department reportedly had to work to get the injured driver out from his car. He was then rushed to the hospital.
According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of the school bus was attempting to make a left turn onto Lindberg Road when it was struck by a southbound Honda car on U.S. 231.
The force of the collision spun the school bus, according to police, causing it to strike a Mercury car that was preparing to turn right on U.S. 231 from Lindberg Road.
Police say the Honda driver, a 20-year-old man, was fatally injured in the incident and is not expected to survive.
The drivers of the school bus and Mercury involved in the crash were both transported to the hospital for blood samples, which is standard for crashes involving serious injury or death, according to police.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash, authorities said.
"Despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel, WLPD has been notified that the victim will not survive his injuries," authorities said in a report.
The Tippecanoe County coroner said they will release the victim’s identity at "an appropriate time."
Authorities did not specify which school corporation was affiliated with the bus.
The exact circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
