INDIANAPOLIS — Food deserts have been a big problem in areas across the city of Indianapolis.
Soon, there will be another way for people in need to get healthy foods in Marion County.
About 25% of people in Marion County deal with food insecurity, which means they do not have enough food or access to healthy food.
A new program called "Drive and Dish" will provide eligible families with meal kits for a year.
The program is aimed at helping low-income families who live in certain ZIP codes that have been identified as food deserts.
The Indiana Pacers organization announced the launch of the program, a joint effort aimed at addressing food insecurity and health disparities in three Marion County communities.
Through the program, 500 boxes of fresh produce, eggs, and a recipe book will be delivered.
The goal is to feed healthy meals to 1,000 families.
The Pacers secured more than $500,000 in funding to support the program for a year.
The program starts Jan. 15, but registration is open now at IndyFoodPolicy.org.
