INDIANAPOLIS — It seems just about everywhere you look in Indianapolis, there's construction.
“Thanks to the mayor's $1.1 billion, five-year budget, we're spending $443 million this year on new infrastructure,” said Jayson Watt, administrator for construction for the city of Indianapolis' Department of Public Works.
On the west side, West Morris Street is undergoing major changes, starting from the bridge over Eagle Creek to South Harding Street. Crews are working to include two-way left turn lanes, divided medians, upgrades to traffic signals, resurfacing roads, new sidewalks, a bike lane and more in the area.
This is just one of many construction zones across Indy that DPW is working fix.
On West Michigan Street and North White River Parkway West Drive, there are even more changes.
“We’re going to be adding some bicycle lanes, increasing safety, calming traffic,” said Watt.
Once complete, West Michigan Street will be reduced to two lanes of traffic, with wider sidewalks, a bike lane and walking path.
"(We’re) just trying to make the area safer for pedestrians and vehicular traffic," said Watt.
If you're driving in the Broad Ripple area, consider parking a little farther away and walking to businesses and restaurants. Construction there entered Phase 2 on Friday and there is no vehicular access to Broad Ripple and Guilford avenues.
Crews will be replacing the stormwater system and widening more sidewalks.
Starting Monday, 38th Street between Emerson and Shadeland avenues will be closed for 130 days as construction on the Purple Line continues.
