DPW cleans up popular east Indy trail, makes safety improvements

Created last year, the city's dedicated trail maintenance crew focuses on safety and line-of-sight improvements.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Department of Public Works crews were on the city's far east side Wednesday, cleaning up a popular trail to improve safety for families.

For years, people living near Grassy Creek Regional Park have called on the city of Indianapolis to tidy up the trail. On Wednesday, a Department of Public Works maintenance team was clearing trees to improve visibility for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The city's dedicated trail maintenance crew was created last year and focuses on safety and line-of-sight improvements all across the county.

"You know, our folks go to work in the dark and they go home in the dark," said DPW director Brandon Herget. "They work hard all day long, and to know what their task is, to know that then they can see a real tangible benefit that they're making in the community is a huge win for our crews."

DPW is hoping for additional money in the budget to expand this team in response to a rise in needed trail maintenance across Indianapolis.
