Destroyed in 2016 tornado, Kokomo apartment complex is taking new tenants

The entire complex will be complete and reopened next year.

KOKOMO, Ind. (WTHR) - Most people hate the moving process.

Andrew and Julia can't help but smile about it as they move into their new apartment.

Their new place is actually their old place.

"I think we both always kept hope. I've been dreaming about it for the last two years. I think It was hard to wrap our minds around it at the time, because there was so much damage. So much damage," Julia said.

The couple lived at Park Place Apartments in 2016, when a tornados tore through Kokomo on August 24.

The storm caused them and 250 other families to be evicted from the complex.

"It was crazy. There was a huge crack in the center of our apartment and water was coming all the way in," said Andrew.

Now, a little more than two years later, they're among the first to move into the newly-remodeled units.

"It's very quiet. It's kinda nice," he said.

"It's very exciting to have a beautiful new apartments everything is modernized. Many, many upgrades," said property manager Pamela Reed.

Construction continues on several buildings in the complex.

While not every building at the Park Place Apartments took a direct hit, roofing issues forced the city to condemn it.

And now, just like many other buildings destroyed in the tornadoes, this one has found new life.

The entire complex will be complete and reopened next year.
