PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. — First responders were busy across parts of Indiana Friday as remnants of Hurricane Helene rolled into the Hoosier State. Weather advisories warned about heavy rain and gusty winds for most of the day.
In Putnam County, sheriff's deputies were investigating a crash on U.S. 40 where a car ran into a tree Friday when yet another tree came crashing down — directly on top of a police vehicle.
The deputy standing nearby escaped injury, according to the department.
The sheriff's department said the marked sport utility vehicle was "smashed" in the incident.
Photos posted on Facebook showed much of the rear portion of the truck was impacted and window glass on the side and rear was gone.
"Too close for comfort," the department said in a social media post. "Blessed beyond belief that it's only a vehicle."
The sheriff's department said they continued to be busy late Friday and that the fire services were "keeping up with the downed trees as fast as they can."
