Inmate found unresponsive at Howard County Jail; death investigation underway

Correctional officers discovered the inmate unresponsive Monday morning, the sheriff's office said.

HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. — A death investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive at the Howard County Jail Monday morning.

Around 7:15 a.m. Jan. 29, correctional officers passing out breakfast trays discovered a male inmate unconscious and unresponsive, the Howard County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Officers and medical staff began tending to the inmate, who was taken to Ascension St. Vincent Kokomo, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials identified him as Leroy O. Anderson, of South Carolina.

An autopsy conducted by the Howard County Coroner's Office on Tuesday found no indication of trauma or foul play. The cause of Anderson's death is pending toxicology and lab testing results. Those results are expected to come back in six to eight weeks.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Howard County Sheriff's Office Det. Scott Waymire at 765-614-3463.
