21-year-old man dead after trench collapse in Noblesville

First responders were called to the area near East 146th Street and River Road around 9:45 a.m. Monday.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The Noblesville Fire Department confirmed a 21-year-old man died after he was trapped in a trench that collapsed in Noblesville Monday morning.

Firefighters pulled the man from the trench shortly after noon, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Emergency crews were called to the 14600 block of Umber Avenue, near East 146th Street and River Road, for a trench rescue around 9:45 a.m. May 13.

A spokesperson with the Noblesville Fire Department told 13News a 21-year-old contractor was installing water pipes when the collapse happened.

Crews were working to stabilize the area around the hole to free the man, who officials said was buried up to his shoulders and unresponsive.

Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison identified the deceased as 21-year-old as Shawn Young, of Elwood, Indiana.

More than two dozen firefighters responded to the scene Monday morning. The trench is 8 feet deep and 4 feet wide, officials said.
