Crews battle large mulch fire

Firefighters from several districts are tanking in water.
Trucks lined up at the scene

Mooresville - Crews spent hours overnight battling a stubborn fire at a mulch company in Morgan County.

Greendell Mulch and Mix is located along State Road 42 east of State Road 39. That is near Mooresville.

The fire started burning around 1am Monday. Crews were able to contain it, but several hours later there were still hot spots that continued to flare up.

Firefighters from six to eight districts were used to truck water to the site. The game plan was to continually douse the mulch until it all fizzled out.

Crews were afraid wind would blow burning embers into nearby buildings or field.

Lt Brian Hammond from Monroe Township said his initial concerns were high winds and flying debris that could have ignited a nearby corn field just east of the blaze.

The flames did not spread and no injuries were reported. A piece of machinery at the mulch company was damaged.

Although there was a thick cloud of smoke in the area, traffic was never effected.
