Crews battle large fire at scrap yard on Indy's west side

The Wayne Township Fire Department said no one was injured in the fire Saturday afternoon.

INDIANAPOLIS — Firefighters battled a large fire at a west Indianapolis business Saturday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m. on April 13, firefighters were called to 1300 North Mickley Avenue, near 10th Street and North Lynhurst Drive, on a report of a building fire. The location is listed on Google as Zore's Recycling.

The fire was visible across the city as crews worked to bring it under control. Wayne Township Fire Department Captain Eric Banister said the smoke was visible from as far as Whiteland and that it caused traffic congestion around the site of the fire.

Banister said the fire was intense when crews first arrived and that it was challenging to get water to the fire because of its concentration in the middle of a scrap pile.

Wayne Township FD says that operators who work for Zore's Recycling assisted firefighters with removing heavy debris from the scrap pile to help gain access to the origin of the fire.

"There is no immediate cause for alarm," Banister said. "None of our meters have gone off with anything of high toxicity. The health department will be out here soon to do some monitoring."

The fire took about two hours to bring fully under control.

Investigators are currently looking into what may have caused the fire.
