Correction in state's road funding formula unlocks millions for improvements in west Indianapolis neighborhoods

Road rehab got underway Thursday in the Country Club Pines neighborhood on the west side.

INDIANAPOLIS — Some major road work is underway in neighborhoods on the far west side of Indianapolis.

These are improvements to residential roads, not main thoroughfares. They're fixing streets and sidewalks right where people live.

The city started road rehab Thursday, April 18 in the Country Club Pines neighborhood. Nine streets are getting work in the subdivision near Country Club and Crawfordsville roads.

This project will last weeks, not months, but it's part of a big one. $25 million was allocated to pay for resurfacing, new ADA-compliant curb ramps and repaired sidewalks across the county.

More projects like this will become possible after a correction in the state's road funding formula last year. That change now allocates money for work in Wayne, Decatur and Pike townships. For decades, those areas weren't included for access to Indy's road money.

"Now they are," Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said. "And that means $16 million every year that we would not otherwise receive can go into residential roadways like the ones we're rehabbing today."

These west side roads will remain open during the work.

As for which streets get attention, the city is using a "worst first" approach.

"We're using data now to address the most need first across the county," DPW Director Brandon Herget said. "We've changed that process, and where we are today is trying to be as efficient as we can with taxpayer resources."

This project is expected to be completed by June. Neighbors can look for signage and QR codes to navigate around the road work.
