INDIANAPOLIS — Inside Francis Bellamy School 102, classrooms have been transformed into a food pantry, closet and weight room.
They're all part of a new community resource center called "The Spot."
"We just know there is a huge need, and we want to be here to fill the need," said Chrystal Hines, of Inner Beauty Inc.
The Spot was created by three community organizations: Voices Corp., Inner Beauty and New BOY.
"It's been a dream of ours for years and we bring so many compliments to each other," said Kia Wright, of Voices Corp. "Just think about a neighborhood kid being able to have access to three or four different agencies."
Not only will families be able to get physical resources, but they'll also be part of leadership and wellness classes.
"It really just allows kids to talk about what they want to talk about and have unfiltered dialogue," said Trey Jefferson, a student of Voices Corp.
While every classroom provides something different, organizers say they all have the same purpose, which is to bring these resources back to the community that lost them when the school closed down.
"Folks being able to walk over and have access to mental health and to food and clothing is a big relief we have seen so far," Hines said.
Even when they opened Saturday, organizers say neighbors felt the impact.
"I've been seeing families that look in need happy after they come out of the pantry, happy they can get something to eat, happy they can get some clothes," Juell Draper said.
