Indianapolis comedian, actor Mike Epps hosting free concert at near northeast side park

The free concert event is focused on supporting the positive impacts of art and culture on mental health and wellbeing.

INDIANAPOLIS — Hometown hero Mike Epps is bringing the ultimate free concert event to the near northeast side of Indianapolis.

The comedian and actor is hosting Mike Epps' Community Concert from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 at Frederick Douglass Park, located at 1616 E. 25th St.

The free concert event is focused on supporting the positive impacts of art and culture on mental health and wellbeing, especially in the Black community. Performers include Stokely, formerly of Mint Condition; Donell Jones; and Full Force.

"I thought maybe I'd bring some joy to the city, bring the morale up and give it to the people. And make sure they have a good time," Epps said.

Growing up not too far from downtown Indianapolis, the comedian and actor is well aware of some of the issues the city faces.

"I've always had a passion and a love for my hometown. No matter where I travel and go, my heart is always still in Indianapolis," said Epps.

Like many others, he's frustrated by the crime and complex issues Indianapolis is facing, but thinks wrapping around young people is the answer.

"I think a lot of our children are bored. They don't have nothing to do. And I think us — a lot of the city leaders, we need to come together and figure out what we can do to give these kids a chance to occupy themselves," Epps said.

By placing children and families in a creative space this weekend, Epps hopes he can have a positive impact while sharing a simple message.

"Shoot for the stars. Be all you can be. Believe in yourself. And number one, love yourself. Once you can love yourself, you can love others," he said.

Reflecting on his childhood in Indianapolis, Epps said it was a happy time and wants others to understand the tough times he did face helped make him who he is today.

"I'm going to continue to work hard to help people that are unfortunate. Because I come from an unfortunate world and I understand it. It's my duty and my choice to give it back," he said.

Epps said he hopes to turn the community concert into an annual event.
