Indianapolis - Police say a Colts player spent the night in jail after refusing to leave a nightclub parking lot.
Defensive tackle Darrell Reid, 26, reportedly refused to move for police after several requests at the Oxygen Lounge near 82nd Street and Allisonville Road shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.
"According to the officer, Mr. Reid became argumentative, raised his voice, refused to calm himself down and also refused to leave the property after being asked several times to do so," said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson.
Police say Reid was trying to get into the club as off-duty officers, working security, were trying to get people out after the club reached capacity.
"The club would actually be in violation of fire code if they had too many people inside," Sgt. Thompson said.
Authorities told Eyewitness News it wasn't just the club itself that ran out of room. Traffic also started to become a problem in the small parking lot.
"There were people who wanted to leave and couldn't get out because of the traffic problem," Sgt. Thompson said.
According to police, Reid was trying to drive into the parking lot when an officer stopped him, explaining that the club owners weren't allowing anyone inside. Officers said Reid told them he knew the owner and asked if he could cut through traffic. The officer then told him to leave, but Reid refused.
"At one point, the officer noted that Mr. Reid backed his vehicle up, almost striking another vehicle in an attempt to cut in line and get into the club itself," Sgt. Thompson said.
When the officer asked Reid to leave again, police say, he stated, "I don't have to, because I'm a football player with the Indianapolis Colts." He then put his car in park and started yelling at the officer.
At that point, police arrested Reid for disorderly conduct and trespass and took him to jail. He made bail and was released from jail Sunday evening.
Colts spokesman Craig Kelley said the team was aware of the situation but would withhold comment.
It's the second time in less than a year, a Colts player has been arrested for not leaving the parking lot of a night club.
Running back Kenton Keith was arrested in downtown Indianapolis last April. Keith remained on the roster during training camp but was cut before the start of the regular season.
Reid has been a backup throughout his four-year career with the Colts but has became a major contributor on special teams and has served as Indianapolis' fullback when it needs a lead blocker.
He joined the Colts in 2005 when he was an undrafted free agent from Minnesota who made the team's opening day roster.
It's not the first time Reid, who has participated in former coach Tony Dungy's father-son football camps and other community events, has had a run-in with the law.
In 2007, he was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession in his hometown of Freehold, N.J. The officer who responded noticed a strong smell of marijuana and saw a small plastic bag in the open door of Reid's rental car that contained marijuana, police said.
