SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WTHR) — Sixteen Corvette Indianapolis 500 pace cars are up for auction at the Mecum Auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Eyewitness News got a preview last month of the of a one-of-a-kind collection at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Mecum is auctioning them off for a Fort Wayne man who has been collecting them for 20 years.
He has at least one car from every year a Corvette paced the Indianapolis 500 dating back to the first time in 1978.
"Corvette is iconic with American sports car,” said Mecum’s Ben Christoffel. “When you talk about American sports cars, you talk about Corvette, and what better place to show off your American sports car.”
The auction includes the owner's rights to this year's pace car as well.
The 16 past pace cars are just a small selection of the 2,000 cars at the auction.
The auction goes through May 20.
