A western Indiana effort to capture the state's Civil War history in a digital format hopes to preserve some 2,000 artifacts through an expansion into Sullivan County.

The Sullivan County Historical Society is working with the Wabash Valley Visions & Voices at Indiana State University to preserve artifacts and photographs from the Civil War.

About 1,200 items already have been digitized in Vigo County. Project Director Cinda Ann May tells the Tribune-Star she hopes to get about 800 additional items by expanding the project into Sullivan County.

The Sullivan County items received so far include an 1862 U.S. flag flown during the Civil War. More items are expected during a community day planned in August.
