City plans revitalization of Sherman Park neighborhood

Plans are in the works to clean up the Sherman Park area and bring new businesses chosen by the neighborhood.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Plans are in the works to clean up the Sherman Park area and bring new businesses chosen by the neighborhood.

The 50 acres of land on the near east side once housed the former RCA plant, but it's been vacant for more than 20 years. There are environmental concerns about the area, which has also seen a lot of crime in recent years.

"This has been a place that's been a symbol of despair rather than hope for a long time and this plan today kind of turns the tide on that and we're starting to work toward a much better future for this site and the Sherman Park neighborhood," said City-County Councilor Blake Johnson.

Plans call for light industrial production, retail and residential areas and green space.
