Circle of Lights brings thousands of people to downtown Indy to kick off the holiday season

While some families returned to Monument Circle as part of an annual tradition, others were visiting the "Circle of Lights" for the first time.

INDIANAPOLIS — The glow of thousands of lights bouncing off hundreds of smiling faces.

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and then I look around like, 'Ahhhhh,'" said Noavella.

Some of those faces have been going to Downtown Indy, Inc. Circle of Lights presented by IBEW 481 for decades.

But for one brother and sister, their tradition is something they've only experienced once.

"Every year there is a firework show that goes on after they light the tree and we have only seen it one time since the '70s, because we're always in the wrong spot and we can never figure it out," said Bob Vaughan and his sister, Christey Lanham.

While they may be celebrating their annual tradition, others are hoping to create one that will be passed on from generation to generation.

"Starting that kind of tradition is a good thing for us and that type of stuff shows the kids that in the future they can do traditions with their families as well," said the Williams family.

For the Lipscomb family, they've never seen the Soldiers & Sailors Monument all lit up.

"We want to see the lights. We've never been here before. We've lived here 30 years and never been here yet," said the Lipscomb family.

And while the kids were excited to see what they say looks like a giant Christmas tree all lit up, they hope to have something underneath theirs when they get home.

"I want a pocket rocket," said one little boy.

As for the Lipscomb kids, "Just some toys. An Xbox. Umm, toys," they said.
