Cincinnati Bengal and Cathedral alum Ted Karras kicks off Season 2 of the Indy Hat Project

The Indy Hat Project raises funds, awareness and supports adults with developmental disabilities in Indianapolis through the Village of Merici.

INDIANAPOLIS — Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Ted Karras, an Indianapolis native and Cathedral High School alumnus, is excited to kick off the second season of The Indy Hat Project, which raises funds, awareness and supports adults with developmental disabilities in Indianapolis through the Village of Merici.

After the huge success of The Cincy Hat Project and the $350,000 of net profits raised for Village of Merici, Karras was inspired last year to create a brand to celebrate the great tradition of his hometown: the Indianapolis 500.

The online merchandise store sells a line of stylish hats, polos and T-shirts embracing the Indy 500 and the signature checkered flag. Last year, 1,500 hats were sold, and this year, the goal is to further the impact with a new line of bucket hats, youth hats and visors.

“We are excited to showcase the new 2024 designs and raise even more funds and awareness for Village of Merici,” Karras said. “Seeing this project flourish and how it directly impacts the VoM residents is extremely rewarding to me and my family.”

Karras has been a longtime supporter of Village of Merici, its mission and the people it serves. The organization provides direct support services, learning opportunities and independent living through partnerships with various developers. Village of Merici currently supports more than 120 adults with developmental disabilities throughout Indianapolis. Earlier this year, Village of Merici announced the addition of the Brunette Building, a new condo development in Ft. Benjamin Harrison, designed for adults with developmental disabilities. The development is two doors down to the original Merici Village Apartments.

“After launching Indy Hat project in 2023, it was obvious the love the public has for the iconic checkered flag and what it symbolizes," said Matt Renie, longtime friend of Karras and partner of both Cincy Hat and Indy Hat Project. “The merchandise is not only popular with race fans, but also the Indianapolis community. We are thrilled to see the growth of the brand and increasing sales in 2024.”
