Children's Museum sells out of free admission for MLK Jr. Day activites

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, to celebrate what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 95th birthday.

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the largest children's museum in the world with a 481,000 square-foot facility situated on 30 acres.

INDIANAPOLIS — In celebration of what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 95th birthday, the Children's Museum of Indianapolis is offering free admission on Monday, Jan. 15. 

While the museum is typically closed on Mondays during this time of year, but it will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to commemorate the MLK Jr. Day holiday. 

However, at this time, all of the available free tickets have been sold out. Those lucky enough to get a ticket and attend will be treated to a wide range of things to do.

The museum will host special activities and performances celebrating King's life and history. Here are the events taking place and where:

  • Eli Lilly and Co. Visiting Scientist: Robot Hand in the Corteva Agriscience STEM Lab
    • Times: 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m., 3 p.m., 3:45 p.m.
      • Use simple materials to build a functioning model hand that you can take home and show off.
  • Griot Drum Ensemble performances in Lilly Theater
    • Times: 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
      • The Griot Drum Ensemble will perform authentic traditional West African drumming.
  • Words of Inspiration in Gathering Room A
    • Times: 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
      • Portia Jackson leads reflection and discussion on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Artist Ess McKee in Program Room 101
    • Times: 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
      • Exploring the art of printmaking 
  • Ruby Sound and Light Show in the Power of Children exhibit
    • Times: 10:10 a.m., 10:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 12:40 p.m., 1:40 p.m., 2:40 p.m., 3:10 p.m., 3:40 p.m., 4:10 p.m., and 4:40 p.m.
      • A five-minute film about Ruby Bridges and how she faced the unimaginable. 
  • Changemakers: Superhero in You in the Power of Children exhibit
    • Times: Noon and 2 p.m.
      • How one inspiration child served as an example of overcoming discrimination.

In addition to the activities listed above, there will also be a series of events from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Sunburst Atrium discussing community initiatives, human resources information for those wishing to join the Children's Museum team, a Nyla Nova "STEMversity," and a College Choice 529 presentation.
