INDIANAPOLIS — The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is celebrating it's upcoming 100th birthday in a very big way!
The museum announced plans to install a 12-story Ferris wheel to give guests a bird's eye view of the museum, as well as the downtown Indianapolis skyline and the surrounding area.
The Centennial Ferris Wheel will be built on the northwest corner of the Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience (where the Hall Family Dragstrip was once located, along Illinois Street). It will make its debut on March 15, 2025 and run through Nov. 2, 2025 as the Children's Museum celebrates its centennial in 2025.
"Ferris wheels have a unique appeal that combines nostalgia, panoramic views and a sense of excitement," said the museum's president and CEO, Jennifer Pace Robinson. "Throughout our Centennial year, we are celebrating 100 years of sparking memories, wonder, and dreams. We are excited to add this unique experience that will offer families a chance to do all three!"
The 110-foot tall Ferris wheel is said to be one of the biggest portable Ferris wheels in North America, according to the museum. It is being leased from Ride Worx, which has provided rides and experiences for the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio, among other attractions, the museum said in a release.
In addition to museum admission, tickets will cost $6 for Children's Museum members and $8 for nonmembers.
The wheel has 24 gondolas that can seat up to six people at a time, including a gondola which is wheelchair accessible. Rides typically last 7-8 minutes, the museum said.
