Carmel's 'Festival of Ice' returns

The festival takes place Jan. 19-21 at The Ice at Carter Green in Carmel.

CARMEL, Ind. — The 2024 edition of the "Festival of Ice" is back at Carter Green in Carmel this weekend.

Visitors bundled up for the weather on Saturday to see the ice carving creations and competition. The Carmel Fire Department was also featured at the event, hosting a chili cook-off.

As for the ice, one sculptor says it's the perfect weather for this kind of event.

"I love having all of my ice family together. We all work in the same medium, but as you go through the last hour or so of this competition, you'll see some masterpieces," said Matthew Stoddart, an ice sculptor. "Everyone has their own unique style, how they break down these four blocks of ice in the timeframe we have and the end result is always mind-blowing."

The festival takes place Jan. 19-21 and is free to the public. A speed carving competition will wrap up the celebrations Sunday.
