Carmel basketball coach helps keep team connected during time apart

Carmel basketball head coach Ryan Osborn wanted to do something to keep his team together during this time apart.

CARMEL, Ind. (WTHR) – Carmel basketball couldn’t have drawn up a better start to the month of March, winning their sixth consecutive sectional title.

But before they could continue their journey back to Bankers Life Fieldhouse, the season came to a screeching halt.

Head coach Ryan Osborn wanted to do something to keep his team together during this time apart.

“Being connected is a big thing for us and when you lose the state tournament and kids don’t have school, especially at that age, it’s important to keep them connected and in routine and strive towards something,” Osborn said.

So coach got creative and created Greyhound Bingo. The bingo card has 24 challenges on it. Players—and even coaches—have to complete the tasks and when they do, they post picture and video proof to Twitter.

“I think what you’re seeing right now is they have to do stuff like when we were younger going out in the driveway," Osborn said. "You had to do that because school wasn’t an option and basketball wasn’t year round like it is now.“

There are a wide range of tasks on the card. From 100 free throws to challenging a teammate to a virtual game of HORSE.

Coach Osborn also threw in acts of kindness like make breakfast for your family or help a neighbor with a household task.

While bingo had become something the team can enjoy together, coach Osborn is looking forward to when basketball is back.

“Just hearing it gives me chills," Osborn said. "When we have that opportunity again, the kids will be so fired up. Just to be together and see each other again. I’m excited for them.”
