INDIANAPOLIS — A nursing home on the north side of Indianapolis will need to rebuild after a car crashed into it Saturday, causing structural damage.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, witnesses said an employee was pulling in to park in front of the Harcourt Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation center in the 8100 block of Harcourt Road, near West 79th Street, around 3 p.m. Nov. 11 when the employee said their foot accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending them into the building.
The driver then attempted to back out of the building to park a second time. However, they hit the gas pedal again on accident, causing the car to go over the sidewalk and into the building a second time.
IFD said the portion of the structure that was damaged was an unoccupied dining area.
There were four residents in nearby rooms, according to IFD, but they were not harmed in the accident. IFD said those residents have since been relocated.
AES shut down power to the building and required an electrician to properly assess the damage.
The employee behind the wheel had slight injuries and needed assistance to get out of their car, according to IFD.
