Hinkle Fieldhouse designated a state historic site

The home of the Butler Bulldogs unveiled a new historical marker on Saturday to commemorate the designation.

INDIANAPOLIS — Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse was officially recognized as a state historic site Saturday.

The Indiana Historic Bureau was on campus Dec. 9 to dedicate the location's new historical marker.

The new marker recognizes Hinkle Fieldhouse's local, state and national reputation as a symbol of the Indiana basketball tradition.

The arena opened in 1928 under the name "Butler Fieldhouse" and served as a military training center during World War II. From the time it opened until 1971, the arena was home to the IHSAA basketball state championships.

It was renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1965 to honor Tony Hinkle, a three-sport coach and athletic director at Butler.

In addition to hosting Butler Bulldogs men's and women's basketball events, it most recently served as the temporary home of the Indiana Fever during Gainbridge Fieldhouse's 2020-2022 interior renovations.
