Butler University eyes parking, housing project

Butler University is looking to deal with parking and housing troubles near its Indianapolis campus with new parking garage and student housing project.

Butler University is looking to deal with parking and housing troubles near its Indianapolis campus with new parking garage and student housing project.

Butler officials say work could begin next spring on the estimated $45 million project between the school's Clowes Hall concert venue and Hinkle Fieldhouse basketball arena. The project is expected to include about 1,000 parking spaces, up to 10,000 square feet of retail space and 300 beds of student housing.

Butler Tarkington neighborhood president Jeremy Stewart tells the Indianapolis Business Journal that residents support the project as a way to remove student cars from neighborhood streets and help reduce the number of student rental houses on the city's north side.

The site of the planned four-story project is now a 200-space surface parking lot.
