Body of kayaker pulled from White River in southern Indiana

LAWRENCE COUNTY, INDIANA, Ind — The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating after the body of a kayaker was pulled from the White River in Lawrence County Thursday evening.

Around 2:30 p.m. June 13, first responders were notified that 52-year-old Brian Howell, of Mitchell, went missing in the river near the Lawrenceport boat ramp. Howell was reportedly attempting to reach gear that had washed away from his kayak while in turbulent water.

Howell's body was located by conservation officers in the area around 9 p.m. 

"An exact cause of death is pending medical examination, and the incident is still under investigation," Indiana DNR said in a statement.

Lawrence County is approximately 75 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.
