Boaters, Indiana DNR ready for Labor Day weekend

Workers at Geist Marina encourage boaters to come into the office before getting on the water to check any new rules, as well as check them before leaving the dock.

INDIANAPOLIS — As people head out for their Labor Day weekend, many might be heading to the lake. One of the busiest spots will be Geist Marina on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

"Come out early and leave late — that's our goal," Betty Sturtevant said.

That's the plan for Sturtevant and her grandkids. 13News caught up with them at the dock before they met up with the rest of their family.

While they plan on being out all weekend, they know how hot it can get, so they planned accordingly.

"Lots of coolers, lots of drinks and when it gets crazy, we go back home," Sturtevant said.

Another thing on their boats? Plenty of life jackets.

"If you fall in the water, you could sink without a life jacket on. especially when you are on the tube and there is no adult," Sturtevant's granddaughter said.

Another group told 13News they came out early to make sure they beat the crowd. They said while they are excited for a fun weekend, it's important for them to keep everyone safe.

"There's going to be a lot of people out on the water, so you just have to take care of everybody, not just yourself," one said.

Geist Marina workers say this weekend is one of their busiest. With extra boats on the water, expect to see more DNR patrols out as well.

There are key things to remember before hitting the water:

  • If you are the driver, be aware of any safety markers and isle zones.
  • Life jackets must be worn by everyone on your boat.
  • Give other boats enough room, especially fishing boats.
