LAWRENCE, Ind. (WTHR) - An man is caught on camera apparently stealing from a Pendleton Pike business, and the subsequent foot chase that put officers in harm's way was recorded, too.
The store’s management was shocked when they saw the man in a store security monitor. Checking out beer steins on the shelves, he apparently decided to take a few home.
“I thought ‘I can't believe I am really seeing this,’” said Angela Corkwell, business manager at The Heidelberg Haus German Bakery and Gift Shop.
She called police when she witnessed the man allegedly putting two steins in his jacket.
It happened in front of a store security camera, placed in plain view inside the business.
“Just for the safety and security for our customers. You always worry about something happening in today's day and age," Corkwell said.
For his third selection, the man appears to put a stein down the front of his trousers.
“(I) could not believe someone would really shove a beer stein down his pants, but sure enough he did," said Corkwell.
The man exited through the store’s front door just as Lawrence police arrived, sparking a foot chase through traffic on the several lanes of busy Pendleton Pike.
On Wednesday evening, a Lawrence police spokesman said the person arrested identified himself as Robert Miller, 42, Indianapolis. He was charged with theft, resisting law enforcement and obstructing traffic and was taken to the Marion County jail.
No one was injured.
